Let’s face it – getting ranked on the first page of a major search engine is what every blogger and website-runner dreams of. But only a few people know how to actually do that. There are many helpful articles on the Internet that tell you how to do that. However, most of those articles talk solely about Google. Other major search engines like Bing and Yahoo Search are often not mentioned in those articles. Since Bing SEO is making a lot of progress and as a lot of people are using Bing these days, we have come up with some techniques you can employ to get your blog featured on its first page.
But before we get started, we must inform you that the process to be ranked in Bing within 30 days will not be easy. It will take a lot of dedication and persistence, and you should never give up. Even after getting ranked, you must consistently keep pushing so that you can maintain that rank.
Firstly, why Bing? That’s because even though Google is the leading search engine, Bing is expanding. Moreover, Yahoo Search is in fact powered by Bing. So ranking high on Bing will also get you a high rank on Yahoo Search. It is safe to say that Bing will climb even higher up in the search engine hierarchy and grab a larger market share.
Now let’s see what you need to do.
Bing SEO Techniques to Rank High
Engage your users
Bing loves sites and blogs that engage the readers. Bing uses ‘pogo sticking’ to measure how much engagement your website has. When a searcher clicks on your website from the search engine and then hits the back button a while later, it shows that your website is not engaging enough. As a result your potential visitors are leaving your website to go to another one. This works adversely for you on Bing.
But if many people go to your website and stay there without hitting the back button, Bing takes it as a positive signal of your user engagement. So you should make sure that you can keep your users in your page.
Headlines must be click-worthy
Let’s use an example to illustrate this point. Say you search for the keyword “DIY bookmarker” on Bing. If the entry ranked at 7 gets more clicks than the one in ranked 3, then Bing understands that the former is more relevant, and pulls it up in the list, while pushing down 3. This is called click through rate.
In order to have higher ranks in Bing, you must have a good click through rate. That can only be done by having catchy click-bait titles that clearly emphasises the keywords.
Use social signals to your benefit
When we say social signal, we mean links from Facebook, Twitter, etc. If something is relevant, Bing shows results of those keywords from social media websites too. Take advantage of that. To do that, you should share your posts on social networks and mention the keywords as well. Do this on a regular basis, and try to do so across all of your social media profiles.
Don’t worry about back-links
Unlike Google, Bing does not care much about the backlinks when it comes to performing searches. Though backlinks are important, Bing’s top search results reveal lesser backlink than those of Google’s top search results. So don’t waste much time on it if your sole focus is to rank on Bing.
Focus on anchor texts
Anchor text, which is “the clickable text in a hyperlink” according to Wikipedia, is more emphasized by Bing than Google. Bing has to rely on anchor texts as Bing isn’t that good in matching keywords to their synonyms and the overall context like Google does. So do use anchor texts to your benefit, but don’t overdo it.
Use keyword in your domain name
If your website or blog is based on a particular theme, then use related keywords in your domain name. Bing has a knack for showing websites in the ranks whose domain matches the searched keyword. For example, if your website’s theme is internet security, then your domain should have related keywords like online, safety, security, etc. The next time someone searches Bing for online security, your blog will come up, provided you are following all the other steps.
However, it must be mentioned that Google doesn’t take this approach, and even filters out such domains.
Prioritize on quality and length of content
Sites that contain unique content and posts are ranked higher on Bing’s search results. Moreover, Bing values long and engaging posts over shorter ones. Therefore you should focus on writing substantial posts with at least 500 words per post. Make this a regular habit, and post frequently. A blog that posts once a month is not that good an idea. If possible, post on a regular basis, or at least every other day.
Keep keyword density in mind
As mentioned earlier, Google looks at the entire context and synonyms of particular words in the anchor text. But it also applies for the content. Similarly, Bing is more inclined on finding the exact keywords in the anchor text as well as the context. One keyword per page is a safe bet while optimizing your keywords for Bing. Be vigilant and try to avoid falling into Google Panda filter due to excessive duplicate words.
Keep your content closest to the surface
Bing is transparent about some matters when it comes to searching for content. One of their advice is that you keep your website structure simple and neat. Content should be more towards the surface rather than buried amidst a lot of others. In simpler words, this means that Bing prefers that you keep your content in such a place that it can be accessed easily within 3 clicks.
Not only is this a good idea for pulling your rank up on Bing, but it is also necessary to retain your website’s visitors. See, if the visitor doesn’t find a piece of content easily, they will be inclined on hitting the back button. As a result, Bing will lower your ranks as it will think that you couldn’t keep your user engaged, as discussed earlier.
Don’t worry about the HTTPS factor
Google is vocal about giving priority to HTTPS, which is a ranking signal for them. But in case of Bing, HTTPS don’t matter. Bing claims that adding HTTPS as a ranking signal is irrelevant and would be unfair for the smaller, lesser known websites.
What More Can I Do?
After doing all of the above, if you still want to run an extra mile to ensure that your website shows up on the Bing search engine’s first result page, we have some good news for you. Bing, being the SEO friendly engine that it is, offers a range of guidelines and tools that you can use. This is something that Google doesn’t do, so that’s an added advantage of using Bing. Am I Doing Something Wrong?
Even after employing many techniques, if your website isn’t ranking in Bing, then there’s a possibility that you’ve done something wrong, for which Bing has penalized your website. But fret not, there’s a way of finding out if that is the case.
Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and proceed to Summary Tools. There, take a look at the Site Status portion. Your site is blocked if the sign reads “Blocked: Yes”. In such cases, it means that there were some errors that you can now rectify.
Though it is true that Bing prefers old domains over new ones, it is not impossible to get your website to rank on Bing’s search results within 30 days. Follow the techniques mentioned in this post, and don’t leave out any. Continue producing good quality content within the guidelines mentioned, and use Bing’s tools to optimize your keywords. Be persistent and don’t give up, and soon, your website will rank in the top search results of Bing. And once it does, don’t forget to keep pushing so that it can maintain its high rank.
